Card Skimmers Found Locally

Release from the Charlottesville and Albemarle County Police Departments:

The Charlottesville and Albemarle County Police Departments are currently investigating four cases that involve skimming devices found at area businesses since September 1, 2016.

These devices have been located at gas pumps, and credit card readers located at store counters and bank A.T.M.s.

Skimmers are small electronic devices that can be placed over or inside card readers. They allow thieves to collect your personal information so they can steal your identity or commit bank and credit card fraud.

These fraudulent devices result in millions of stolen personal identities and billions of dollars lost annually.

Some quick and immediate tips we would like to pass along include:

Be especially vigilant when using 24-hour businesses and self-checkout registers.
When you use your credit or debit cards, take a second to look at the card reader. Try to wiggle the face or the area that you swipe or put in your card to see if it comes loose, exposing the real card reader.
Make sure a light can be seen through the key pad or the card reader area.
Always monitor your statements.
Report anything suspicious to a store manager or the police.

We are not able to release the names of the businesses related with our current investigations, however, please inspect your recent bank and credit card statements. If you feel you may have been a victim of fraudulent activity, contact your financial institution immediately.
